Union Background Artists Contemplate Divorce from SAG-AFTRA

On Monday, August 19, 2019, the Background Artists Coalition (BAC) met with a National Labor Relations (NLRB) Attorney in Manhattan & explored the formal legal administrative steps (RC Petition) that #SAGAFTRA #Background Artists would need to take in order to resume our own INDEPENDENT UNION.

It is clear to all, that over the last decade, the Screen Actors Guild has failed to faithfully advocate for, negotiate for or protect the more than 54,000 Union Background Artists who work in the TV & Film Industry (many of whom work in Studios & on sets right here throughout all 5 Boroughs of NYC).

And the Rank & File can NOT afford any more job losses or Contract Givebacks.

So while BAC is hoping this 2019 SAG-AFTRA election 🗳 might result in New Leadership, and BAC is hoping that New Leadership will deliver in a meaningful way for Union Background Artists - including those UNION MEMBERS on the EAST COAST whose lives & jobs unfold 3 hours earlier than those working in Hollywood West - if SAG-AFTRA DOES get a new boss & the NEW BOSS turns out to be the same as the OLD BOSS? BAC is fully prepared to take the next steps attendant to the process of a Petition for Representation Certification if necessary.

So in terms of timing - in case you want to mark your collective calendars now - that means that if there IS new leadership, they've got about 5 months to get their act together. So start your engines! Your plates are full!
